For a long time, networking and security were treated as two separate jobs. You built the network, then bolted security on top. That was fine when everyone sat in the same office behind the same firewall, but it doesn’t hold up now — and it’s the gap that SASE and SSE were built to close.

People work from home, from client sites, from wherever they happen to be. Applications live in the cloud rather than a server room down the corridor. Hauling all that traffic back through a central data centre just to apply a security policy adds delay and cost, and the old VPN-and-firewall setup starts to creak under the strain.

What SASE and SSE actually mean

SASE — Secure Access Service Edge — brings networking and security together into a single, cloud-delivered service. Rather than stitching together a pile of separate products, it converges SD-WAN with a stack of security functions: Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), secure web gateways (SWG), cloud access security brokers (CASB) and firewall-as-a-service (FWaaS). The result is that a user gets fast, secure access to whatever they need, wherever they are working, without their traffic being dragged through a bottleneck first.

SSE — Security Service Edge — is the security half of that same idea. It’s the ZTNA, SWG, CASB and firewall-as-a-service pieces delivered from the cloud, without the SD-WAN networking layer. For a lot of organisations it’s a sensible place to start; get secure access and web protection sorted first, then bring the wider network into the fold when the time is right.

Why the convergence matters

The reason both approaches have taken off comes down to a few practical things. You run security from a single policy instead of juggling multiple firewalls and disaggregated platforms. You cut down on legacy VPNs and the headaches that come with them. Traffic takes the best available path — SD-WAN can steer it across broadband, MPLS or 5G depending on the application. And because it’s cloud-native, adding or removing a site is quick, whether that site is down the road or in another country.
